Services are provided to eligible individuals with developmental disabilities by the Charles County Department of Health in one or more of four programs:
- Access and Eligibility
- Resource Coordination
- Individual Support Services
- Family Support Services
Access and Eligibility is the point of entry into the Developmental Disabilities Administration (DDA) (http://www.ddamaryland.org) system in seeking services provided in community programs under the jurisdiction of the Administration.
Target Population
To qualify for services, an individual must first be deemed eligible. Anyone with a severe, chronic disability, other than a sole mental health diagnosis, who needs (or will need) residential, day or support services, should apply. To be eligible as developmentally disabled a person needs to meet the criteria set forth by DDA. Eligibility for services depends on the type of disability, its effects on a person’s ability to live independently and the age when the person became disabled.
To apply for services, any Charles County resident may make a referral by calling the Charles County Department of Health at 301-609-6830.
Resource Coordination
Resource Coordination is designed to assist designated individuals with developmental disabilities to obtain the best quality and most appropriate services and supports within available resources. The resource coordinator is responsible to individuals and their families for providing assistance in implementing individual choice, addressing individual satisfaction, and assuring that an individual’s needs and preferences are addressed.
Individual Support Services (ISS)
Individual Support Services (ISS) provides an array of purchase of services to adult individuals with developmental disabilities. Funding is provided to families for services, supplies and equipment.
Family Support Services (FSS)
Family Support Services (FSS) provides funding for individuals under the age of 21. Services include purchasing of services, supplies and equipment.
Transitioning Youth
Students with special needs who are transitioning from school may be eligible for day program services when they are 21 years old. Eligibility is based on several factors and students are encouraged to apply to DDA through Charles County Department of Health as early as age 14.
