FluMist®
IMMUNIZATION
CLINICS FOR CHARLES COUNTY CHILDREN
October 5, 2006 - The Charles County
Department of Health in partnership with the Charles County
Public Schools is providing free seasonal flu vaccinations this
fall for elementary school children as part of the Maryland
Elementary School Influenza Vaccination Project. Healthy
children, between the ages of 5 and 11, are eligible to receive
free FluMist®
nasal vaccine this fall.
FluMist®
is approved for the prevention of influenza in healthy children,
adolescents, and adults 5 to 49 years of age.
FluMist®
is given by nasal spray and used a weakened form of the flu
virus to help provide protection from the flu.
Dr. C. Devadason, Health Officer, states,
“Children may accept this vaccine better since there is no shot
and it doesn’t hurt. Also, there is evidence that vaccinating
children, who are more likely than adults to be infected with
flu virus, reduces exposure to adults.”
Parental consent is required prior to the
administration of the vaccine. The vaccination will be provided
in several locations in October, and notifications will be sent
out shortly.
For additional information, call the
Charles County Department of Health at 301-609-6870.
