Charles County Department of Health Offerings for American Heart Month
The month of February is American Heart Month. The Charles County Department of Health will offer free blood pressure screenings on February 2nd 12:00 noon – 1:00 pm. The department will also host a #GoRedGetFit information and workout session in conference room A&B from 11:30 am-1:00pm. These sessions are free and open to the public.
Heart disease is the leading cause of death for both men and women. According to the 2016 Maryland Vital Statistics Report, there were 241 deaths in Charles County due to heart disease. It is the second leading cause of death, just behind cancer. The 2014-2016 average age-adjusted death rates due to heart disease were 722.0 per 100,000 population. This is higher than the state average rate of 706.7 per 100,000.are affected by heart disease.
You can make healthy changes to lower your risk of developing heart disease. Controlling and preventing risk factors is also important for people who already have heart disease. To lower your risk:
• Watch your weight.
• Quit smoking and stay away from secondhand smoke.
• Control your cholesterol and blood pressure.
• If you drink alcohol, drink only in moderation.
• Get active and eat healthy.
